Preparation for Advent Part 2

~1-10 years after the Temple Dedication

(The visit of the Queen of Sheba to King Solomon, 1890; Artist Sir Edward John Poynter, England)

The Story Of The Kingdom

Now when the queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon concerning the name of the Lord, she came to test him with hard questions. She came to Jerusalem with a very great retinue, with camels bearing spices and very much gold and precious stones. And when she came to Solomon, she told him all that was on her mind. And Solomon answered all her questions; there was nothing hidden from the king that he could not explain to her. And when the queen of Sheba had seen all the wisdom of Solomon, the house that he had built, the food of his table, the seating of his officials, and the attendance of his servants, their clothing, his cupbearers, and his burnt offerings that he offered at the house of the Lord, there was no more breath in her.

And she said to the king, “The report was true that I heard in my own land of your words and of your wisdom, but I did not believe the reports until I came and my own eyes had seen it. And behold, the half was not told me. Your wisdom and prosperity surpass the report that I heard. Happy are your men! Happy are your servants, who continually stand before you and hear your wisdom! Blessed be the Lord your God, who has delighted in you and set you on the throne of Israel! Because the Lord loved Israel forever, he has made you king, that you may execute justice and righteousness.”

The Voice of God’s Truth

A Psalm Of Solomon.

Give the king your justice, O God,and your righteousness to the royal son!  May he judge your people with righteousness, and your poor with justice! Let the mountains bear prosperity for the people, and the hills, in righteousness!  May he defend the cause of the poor of the people, give deliverance to the children of the needy, and crush the oppressor!…

May he have dominion from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth! May desert tribes bow down before him, and his enemies lick the dust! May the kings of Tarshish and of the coastlands render him tribute; may the kings of Sheba and Seba bring gifts! May all kings fall down before him, all nations serve him!…

Long may he live; may gold of Sheba be given to him! May prayer be made for him continually, and blessings invoked for him all the day! May there be abundance of grain in the land; on the tops of the mountains may it wave; may its fruit be like Lebanon; and may people blossom in the cities like the grass of the field! May his name endure forever, his fame continue as long as the sun! May people be blessed in him, all nations call him blessed!

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, who alone does wondrous things. Blessed be his glorious name forever; may the whole earth be filled with his glory!

Amen and Amen!

Consider

Solomon only wrote 2 of the 150 Psalms. One of them (above) makes reference to Sheba and the kings of the earth recognizing God’s fame. Regardless of Solomon’s wealth and wisdom, the Queen of Sheba gives God the credit and glory. Jerusalem was not just the capital of Israel. It was the capital of the world.

Ask yourself

Imagine the curiosity of an outsider like the Queen of Sheba. She traveled to uncover the source of Israel’s blessings. Who do we consider famous? Who would we travel to see or talk to? Where would people pay lots of money to travel to? Where would you?
