Many of you who know me know that I like to reflect and write a lot (hence finally publishing my blog). Here’s a quick summary of these projects
Articles – I’ve written a lot of unpublished articles, reflections, journal entries, songs, letters, etc. in my personal life and professional life. I can’t say how many times I’ve been told (or told myself) to just start a blog. But in the past most of my stuff has just gathered dust on a hard drive. So now I’ll be posting them on www.wgmb.info. I’m a part of a group from TCU who has been gathering annually for about 25 years. This has been one place to share some of my deepest experiences and songs of my soul. On the professional front I’ve published a handful of articles on our company’s website. And I’m doing my best to try and share those in meaningful ways to help leaders and their teams. I’ve learned so much in the last 10 years working in collaboration with so many amazing consultants and leaders. I don’t deserve the opportunity I’ve had. But I certainly hope to fuel the movements I’ve been a part of and change hearts and minds for greater things. I’ll be posting these at www.gordonblocker.com in late summer 2023
Devotionals – I wrote a devotional called “If It Wasn’t For The Night.” It’s a one-month tool to use prior to Advent. I realized that I didn’t practice Advent very much or very well. Advent means ‘arrival’ and is meant to help us enter into the anticipation that might have captured 1st century Jews who awaited a Savior AND the anticipation we should have as Christians as we pray, “Your Kingdom Come!” It’s hard to know the good news without the bad news. And it’s hard to appreciate the need for a Savior and King to come when we live sheltered and comfortable lives. So, the devotional covers the parts of Scripture I understand the least: the prophets. I think I learn best when trying to share. So, one day I just took out scores of sticky notes and tried to understand where all these folks fit into the big picture. After that journey I realized how crucial they are to help us understand our own depravity and need for Jesus. I’ve also written devotionals for father/son relationships and other topics.
Journey Home – I’ve written a few dozen reflections on my experiences in the church and have called it “Journey Home.” As I say in the intro, “It includes stories from ‘my’ journey home as it details some specific experiences I’ve had in recent years. It also means ‘the’ journey home as it details lessons and history I’ve learned about Jesus and His church. It also has a challenge and invitation to journey home ‘with me’ as I continue to engage in fellowship and learn so much about the mysteries of Christ and His church. It’s all this and more.” Sometimes I’m trying explore something for myself and share that real-time. Sometimes I’m trying to dispel misconceptions and share the beauty I’ve experienced. Sometimes I’m just writing because the words are just popping out of my heart and onto the keyboard. Very recently, I’ve read several other testimonies from people like me (ex. Home Sweet Rome by Scott Hahn, Following the Ancient Paths by T. Durant Fleming, and Confessions of a Mega Church Pastor by Allen Hunt). These authors are far more articulate and understand the issues. I’m glad I read these books after I had the chance to write on my own thoughts. They validate the consistent experiences I’ve had. But, they also show how each person is on their own journey and has story to tell.
Books – I wrote a book trilogy that I’m calling a “A Walk To Emmaus.” It’s inspired by the parable in the gospel of Luke, chapter 24. I have an editor who is working through the first book and should release it this year. I honestly just wrote them for myself to reflect on God’s big story and how it’s changed my life. I shared a lot with my own immediate family. If anyone’s interested to receive a draft copy, I’ll be happy to send it to you. Some of you reading this have already read those initial drafts and it’s been great to talk to you all and live the story with you.
For those of you who know me well, you know that I am pretty active and spontaneous and often doing things that others might consider eccentric or outside-the-box. Regardless of how this lands with you it seemed healthy to get it out there. I hope it can renew and revive many old friendships and spark new ones as well. Blessings to all and thank you for reading!
